Planting my garden each year has taught me a little bit about genetics. Did you know that your genetic makeup determines whether you will get sick from this or that? If your ancestors had a cold or disease while they were alive and survived from it they built up immunity which was then passed down to you genetically. Plants are not that much different. Everyone and everything is learning to adapt to the world we live in. Just like humans, plants will learn the weather patterns of an area it’s been planted in so that their seed can adapt. It will learn how much water it got to drink so it will adapt to help it survive when it is getting too much or too little. It will remember what bugs or diseases tried to attack it and if it survived the attack it will then build defenses in order to survive the next attack. It also learns the weather patterns of where it is planted so it will bud and grow at the optimal time in order to produce well. This is why when planting seeds it is good to grow them from your own seeds or to go to a local farm goods store or nursery to get your seeds or plants. These plants already know your area, have built up immunity, defenses, and patterns to living where you live, and will give you a much better crop. I have had much better success and a much better bounty as a result of my seed babies and knowing that all my seeds were free is always the icing on the cake. BUT, when I do need to purchase seeds I try to create a garden full of heirloom, non-GMO, and healthier plants from the very beginning. It’s a lot of fun to mix up the garden and plant something new and I try to incorporate a few new babies in my garden every year. It makes the garden so much fun when you are watching something new grow and learning how it does and what it takes to keep it healthy. This sometimes means I can’t always find what I am looking for locally. When I don’t yet have a seed from my hometown I go searching online. But it is important to me when I do buy seeds from anywhere to shop for seeds from organic and non genetically modified growers. I will talk about why I buy non-GMO (non genetically modified) seeds in a future post but for now I’ll just give you one of the companies I buy from:
I will continue to come back here add more companies when I find more but for now, I have included my favorite. So… if you do go out and plant your garden this year, take the time to research your seeds and make sure you are creating the foundation for a really healthy garden. Doing this at the beginning ensures that by the end of the growing season you will have the best seeds for next year.
